  • FEATURE INTERVIEW (complete the interview with George Washington - started in class. If you don't have lots of homework, please finish at home. If you have lots of homework, you will have a few minutes in class to complete. 

TUESDAY- Nov 4

  • REVIEW FEATURE INTERVIEW with parnters
  • Varying Said: Work on various ways to vary the "said" item. The first part has you choose words, the second part has you write a quote that matches the different ways to say, SAID. 
  • SURVEY STORIES: Review structure of a survey story (take notes on a handout).
  • HOMEWORK: Read the SAMPLE SURVEY STORY> Think about how you need to write your survey story on Friday.  

WEDNESDAY - Nov. 5

  • REVIEW: Story ideas. Review what makes a good survey?Go to quia. co complete the survey online. Think about what makes a good/bad survey question?
  • Review parts of a survey story and learn to write the various sections (handout).
  • HOMEWORK: Come up with three survey questions and the answers you are going to allow the people to choose from. Remember you may not get approved for your first topic. 

Thursday - Nov. 6 - Guest Teacher

  • CREATING A RADIO COMMERCIAL
  • Review the handout and create two commercials for the advertising department. 
  • WRITING ITEMS FOR RADIO AND TELEVISION: Add the radio ads to your NEWS VALUE DOCUMENT> You need to choose three of the five items on the page to complete. Be ready to read them tomorrow in class!   
  • HOMEWORK: Think about your survey topics and responses. We will follow up on Friday. 

Friday - Nov. 7

  • SURVEY APPROVALS - We will be talking about your survey topics. Your choices that you have available for the repsonses and how to get some good quotes (and enough information) for your stories. 
  • NEXT WEEK PREVIEW> MONDAY - Get those surveys started!
  • WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY - SURVEY RESULTS: Write your survey stories. Graphic organizers will be provided for those who need additional help. Leads must be written today before you leave. You will have about half of the period to write your leads and get started on your stories.

  • Quiz re-takes for those who want them. PARTS OF A NEWSPAPER_NEWSWORTHINESS.  
  • FOR THOSE WHO DON"T RE-TAKE: News Worthiness (from the packet)
    • Newspaper editors often have more stories than they can print. How do they determine the stories with the most "news value"?
    • In choosing the most important story our of each set of three below, pretend you are news editor of your school newspaper. 
    • Your choice should be made on the basis of which stories will interest and/or affect the most number of students. 
    • Other factors include timeliness, proximity (nearness), size (impact), conflict, human emotions, and unusualness (uniuqeness). 
    • Be prepared to defend your choices. 
    • TITLE = NEWSVALUES. (save as P_newsvalues_your last name). 
    • PUT NEWS VALUES at the top of the page. 
    • Number each answer. Type the letter of the most newsworthy story and the actual story description. In parenthesis (  )  explain why you chose that one of the three options that you had. 
    • ex. (c) The famous actor will visit next week. (timeliness - even though it would be more timely to choose the one that talked about tomorrow, we have a lot going on this week). 
    • For those re-taking the test -- you will be able to work with a partner to complete the exercise.
